Tupelo, MS (July 16, 2022) - A lineman was hospitalized after he was jerked out of his bucket truck when one of the cables he was installing got caught in the axle of a passing motor home.
The lineman, who is employed by the Tombigbee Electric Power Association, was installing fiber cable along Mississippi Highway 23, just outside of Tremont in Itawamba County when the incident occurred.
A spokesman for the Itawamba Sheriff’s Office said that at about 12:00 p.m., the contractor was yanked out of the truck’s bucket when a cable got tangled in the axle of a motor home as it drove by.
The lineman was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Tupelo with injuries to his back and neck.
The incident is being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Workplace Injuries in Mississippi
A workplace accident can change your life in a second. Following an accident, an employee could be left with broken or fractured bones, serious burns, a brain injury, damage to their spinal cord, or injuries to their shoulders, back, head, or knees. They are left with severe injuries that require costly medical treatments and they are unable to return to work and earn a living.
In Mississippi, companies with 15 employees or more are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. Smaller companies tend to purchase policies from private insurance companies whereas bigger companies often seek state certification in order to become self-insured. Workers’ comp insurance is designed to compensate workers for the damages they sustain when they are hurt on the job.
Workers’ comp is a no-fault system. This means you are not obligated to prove that your employer’s negligence was the cause of your accident. It does not matter if you played a role in the accident. If an employee is injured at work, they are covered no matter who was at fault. Employees are eligible for these benefits on the day they start their job.
Sadly, this does not mean that collecting workers’ comp benefits is easy. Employers and insurance carriers often try to get out of paying what they owe. They can and do challenge and deny workers’ benefits claims.
