Soso, MS - Child Critical After Tree Falls on House in Jones Co

Soso, MS (July 17, 2022) - Jones County firefighters responded to the scene when a child was trapped underneath a fallen tree on Tuesday, July 12th.

The Jones County Fire Council said that, at about 5:35 a.m., a tree fell on a mobile home in Soso, and pinned a child to their bed.

Upon their arrival, fire crews from the Hebron, Calhoun, and Soso Volunteer Fire Departments discovered a young child being crushed under the tree’s weight.

After failing to remove sections of the tree with chainsaws, rescuers used the Jaws of Life to jack up a portion of the tree, creating just enough room for them to reach in and remove the child.

The entire extrication process took 29 minutes.

The child was examined and appeared to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

Two medical helicopters attempted to land in the area but were unable to do so. The child was ultimately taken by Emserv Ambulance Service to a nearby hospital for immediate medical care.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office and Soso Police Department also assisted at the scene.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Falling Tree Injuries in Mississippi

, Soso, MS - Child Critical After Tree Falls on House in Jones Co, Germany Law Firm PLLC

When a victim is hurt by a falling tree, there are multiple factors that dictate who is liable for their injuries. Some factors to be considered include:

  • Who owns the property where the injury occurred?
  • Was the tree on public or private property?
  • Who was responsible for the tree’s maintenance?
  • Was the victim was acting recklessly?

If you were injured in a falling tree accident, the property manager, owner, or other person tasked with controlling or maintaining the property could be held accountable. Accidents involving fallen trees come under the personal injury field of premises liability.

Premises liability is the area of law that makes it possible for victims to hold property managers and owners accountable for injuries sustained on their property. Property owners have a responsibility to keep their premises in a reasonably safe condition.

Due to the extensive amount of work involved, determining whether suing for this type of injury is advisable should be decided by a qualified lawyer.
