Rankin Co, MS (June 25, 2022) - A Mississippi deputy rescued a family and a truck operator from an involved two-car crash on an interstate in Rankin County on Friday, June 24th.
According to sources, a Rankin County Criminal Interdiction Deputy was on his routine patrol on Interstate 20 at about 2:00 p.m.
The deputy was traveling eastbound in the area of milepost 62 when he came upon an accident that had just taken place. A collision between a tractor-trailer 18-wheeler and a passenger vehicle had left both vehicles damaged and off the roadway in a wooded area.
The cab of the tractor-trailer was fully engulfed in flames and was quickly spreading to the trailer. Upon hearing a child screaming, the deputy ran to the passenger vehicle. He quickly located the child outside of the vehicle, behind a felled tree. The deputy was able to move the child to a safe location. The child’s mom and dad managed to extricate themselves from the vehicle and follow the deputy to safety.
They advised the deputy that the truck operator was lying on the ground by his rig and appeared to be deceased. The deputy quickly located the driver alongside his truck, lying on the ground with his backside on fire.
With no thought for his own safety, the deputy immediately rushed to the victim’s aid and moved him away from the flames. He then snuffed the flames on the victim and began administering first aid.
Additional Rankin County Deputies along with Pelahatchie Police Department, MHP, Rankin EOC, Pelahatchie Fire Department, Walters Fire Department, and Pafford Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
All of the accident victims were taken to area hospitals in unknown conditions.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Common Victim Injuries in Mississippi Car Accidents
In a negligence-related crash, a victim can sustain serious injuries that come with long-term consequences. Sadly, vehicle accidents often lead to injuries ranging from serious to catastrophic.
There are some types of injuries that are commonly seen in Mississippi car accidents.
A frequent result of severe vehicle accidents is a traumatic brain injury or another head injury resulting from the unexpected impact and consequent head movement. The impact can force the victim's head against the steering wheel, frame of the vehicle, dashboard, or deployed airbag causing long-term or permanent damage.
Injuries to the spine and back are some of the most severe. For instance, a serious back injury can cause uncorrectable damage to your spinal cord. Once those nerves are damaged, other injuries, such as paralysis, can ensue. In some instances, you a victim will lose all use of their lower extremities. The worst-case scenario for a spine injury ends in quadriplegia, which is the loss of use of both arms and legs.
Neck injuries resulting from vehicle accidents are often referred to as whiplash. Whiplash is one of the most common injuries because it can happen in almost any kind of crash, even a low-speed fender-bender. The more serious the car accident, the more long-term complications can stem from increasingly severe cases of whiplash.
