The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has stated that the United States has a national seat belt usage rate of slightly more than 90%. This means that out of every 100 drivers and passengers in America, 90 of them will be properly buckled up at any given point in time.
In Mississippi, the rate of seat belt usage is a little less than 75%. which puts Mississippi residents in the number four spot of the top five states with the lowest percentages of seat belt usage. The only states with lower numbers to speak of are, in order, Montana (74%), New Hampshire (73%), and South Dakota (69.7%).
The proper use of seat belts saved the lives of almost 300 crash victims in 2015. If 100% of vehicle occupants had taken an extra thirty seconds to buckle themselves up and to make sure their children were properly secured, the lives of an additional 130 car accident victims would have been saved.
