Causes and Injuries in Mississippi Pedestrian Collisions
Pedestrians do not always realize that walking along a roadway, even a quiet one in their own community, has the potential to be dangerous. They expect the drivers of trucks, cars, and other vehicles to obey the law and act responsibly. When problems like poor visibility or distractions are part of the situation, innocent pedestrians can quickly become accident victims, often sustaining catastrophic or fatal injuries in the process.
Contrary to popular belief, pedestrian accidents are not always the pedestrian's fault. Most of the time, they are caused by driver negligence. The most prevalent forms of driver negligence in Mississippi include:
- Failure to yield the right of way on a turn
- Failure to stop at a stop sign or red light
- Driving while distracted
- Driver inattention when going through a crosswalk
- Driving while under the influence
Even though accidents involving two vehicles don’t always end in injuries, accidents involving a pedestrian usually do. Regardless of whether the striking vehicle is a car, pick-up truck, motorcycle, truck, or an oversized commercial vehicle, when it makes contact with a pedestrian it generally results in catastrophic injuries such as:
- Multiple broken and fractured bones
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Traumatic head injuries
- Damage to the spinal cord
- Serious lacerations that can cause scarring and permanent disfigurement
Depending on the speed and size of the vehicle, a pedestrian's injuries could also lead to amputation, which will require multiple surgeries, physical therapy, and life-long disability. In the event that a pedestrian does not survive the accident, certain family members could be entitled to file a claim of wrongful death.
The law states that drivers have a responsibility to operate their vehicles safely, particularly when pedestrians are in the area. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
